Redefining Productivity

When I heard the word “Productivity” I used to immediately think of doing things faster so that I could do more. I was constantly feeling like there weren’t enough hours in the day. I often felt behind and like I needed three of me to get my running to do list done each day.
That is, until I heard someone talk about “Productivity” and “High Performance” in a very different way.
I was at a conference, and had the gift of hearing Brendon Burchard speak to a very small group of leaders. He had been around for awhile, but this was the first time I had heard of him. When he spoke about productivity - it was with the goal to, not add more things to do, but to create more space to fully live life. To make more room for joy, for doing nothing, for just enjoying being alive.
Can you image that? Can you imagine a world, where you became so productive (& impactful), that it left room for you to just be you? To do things just because you want to, not because you have to?
I am proud to say that I have reached that point in my life. It takes intentional practice (and reminding myself that my worth is not in what I do) but it is so worth it. I still have a lot on my plate: Running 3 different businesses (soon to be 4 again) - and the success of three of them depends entirely on me. I have a family & friends that I have commitments to and who I want to spend quality time with. But I have found a way to know what is really needed of me each day with an awareness of how I naturally operate - whether that be rest, recharge, or working.
If you are sitting there, wishing that this could be you. I have some advice for you. I am always thinking of ways to help you be your most authentic confident self, but to help you get there through a practice of small intentional shifts, so you feel like you flow into that state.
Identify What Energizes You
You could look at your calendar or take notice throughout your day. But what is your running list of things you show up for, that you feel like you have to do, or responsibilities you have on a regular basis. Is there anything that feels more like a chore than a joy? What things are you doing because you think “you should” or you would “feel bad if you didn’t”. Anything that doesn’t fill you up - find a way to delegate, remove, or lessen those tasks.
Daily Positive Input
I am a strong believer in putting more good in my days to off set the bad things that are out of my control. One of the ways I do this is through listening to a daily mini-podcast when I’m on the way to the gym. In the Growth Day app, each morning Brendon records what he calls, a Daily Fire, a mini-podcast to help with perspective shifts & encourage you to keep working towards the person you want to become. It’s a perfect way to recharge your mindset (and I love the morning journaling prompts as well). You can start a free trial here.
Take the Slow Days
There will be days, or spaces in your day, when you realize that you don’t have anything to do - or no one needs anything from you. When these moments come, do not fill it with tasks, take advantage of these moments. Acknowledge that this space has naturally happened, and it’s your opportunity to just be. This can be a hard thing to practice - especially when the world says that your worth is based on how helpful you are to others or how much you accomplish. Set down your phone, go outside, read a book, do a hobby, or just sit in the gift of silence. Another busy day will come, but when it does, instead of feeling burned out, you’ll feel refreshed and energized.
Download The Four Rhythms That Will Change The Way You Think
If you are at a loss of what fills you up - or maybe you don’t know how your mind & body operate at it’s best - this guide is for you. The foundation of what I teach my clients is rooted in this practice of the 4 rhythms. The idea is that, if you do these rhythms daily, you will start to feel more confident and clear in who you are. The problems of the day won’t seem so overwhelming. You will know how to move yourself back into positivity when you find yourself back in a discouraged overwhelmed place. Go ahead and download the guide and get started today!
After implementing these practices, my hope is that the next time you hear the word “productivity” or “high performance” you will immediately feel a sense of freedom. That you no longer feel suffocated by everything you have to do but that you feel joy knowing that you have designed a life that supports you being you and that you finally get to enjoy the everyday moments that come your way.
I’m always looking for ways I can meet you where you are in this newsletter. Is this resonating? Would it be helpful to learn how I structure my days to support this type of productivity?
Reply and let me know - I’d love to hear!
Cheers,
Lauren
