5 Things That Helped My Worst Year Be My Best Year

2024 tied for first for the most challenging year of my life. It was uncanny the amount of parallels this year had compared to the other most challenging year of my life.

➡️ I traveled to a bucket list destination but canceled countless trips

➡️ I left/lost my main job

➡️ Some friendships were strengthened

➡️ Other friendships showed their true colors

➡️ I lost a found family

➡️ Formative people in my life passed away

➡️ I started a new business (or two)

➡️ I prioritized my mental & physical health

➡️ There was space to connect back to me

➡️ I found new spaces to be a part of with people who will bring out my best version of me

➡️ “just keep going”

➡️ I confidently set boundaries

At first, I was tempted to say “nothing could prepared me for this year” but the truth is that “I” prepared me for this year because of the small actions I had been slowly taking over time.

I felt with every situation that was handed to me with a different mentality, confidence, & action than I had previously.

The Shift That Changes Everything

In nursing school, we are taught that when we come up on an unfamiliar, yet dangerous situations, instead of running into the chaos, we take a moment to assess the scene, take a deep breath & then take action. While I learned this over a decade ago, I still think of it to this day.

I had my own form of doing this in 2024. As each moment presented itself (good or bad) I did my own assessment before diving in - I asked myself one question:

“Who do I want to be in this moment?”

This one question set a different intention in my heart. It gave clarity to who I wanted to be. It gave confidence to the actions I made & the words I spoke.

And I don’t regret a single one.

Put It Into Practice

While asking myself who I want to be helped me design my best year in the midst of my worst year, there were other outside factors that supported me along the way. When you are used to doing things on your own, it’s easy to fall into the trap that you can do everything on your own. The truth is that we all need help. When you ask for help, the weight that you have been carrying on your shoulders & in your mind become lighter - allowing you to have freedom & clarity to be who you want to be.

Here are a few of the things that helped me this year & direction on how you can connect with them as well.

  1. Hiring a personal trainer who understands woman’s bodies, the necessity of balance, & focusing on small shifts over time
Nicole Gomez is a gift to this world. I had followed her for years on instagram & then, in March, I decided to work one on one with her for 6 months. I have never approached health & fitness the way I have with Nicole. She has a thoughtful & proven way to ease into reaching your goals in a way that works for you & you alone. Follow her on instagram here.

  2. A community that focuses on becoming the best version of you that creates more freedom & vibrancy in your life
From April 2023-September 2024, I was a member of Brendon Burchard’s Ultra program. Everyone in Ultra was focused on becoming ultra successful in every area of their life through getting mentors, peer group and strategies we need to design our most aligned vibrant life. Having the consistency of connection & challenge each month was incredibly important & taught me how to find the people who were the real deal. The friendships I found at those in person meetings were divine. I can confidently say that I am not the same person I was when I joined. Find out more about Ultra here.

  3. Not over thinking going back to therapy & utilizing what works best for me in the moment
In 2017-2018, I saw a therapist for the first time. There is nothing more vulnerable than opening yourself up to someone, but there is also nothing that can get you through what’s holding you back like seeing a professional therapist. In the later half of this year, I had found myself struggling with more anxiety & having less patience than what my baseline had become. In some ways I felt like I was at the top of my game of taking care of myself, mentally physically and emotionally, but it didn’t feel like enough. There happened to be a special running through Betterhelp, that offers online counseling, & I was matched with a therapist that I felt like could help me. Therapy is hard work, & it’s oddly exhausting, but it also is one of the best ways you can take care of you. Get 2 free weeks of therapy through Betterhelp.

  4. Morning journaling that is purposeful & sets you up for success even if things don’t go as planned
I have always been a journaler, but it wasn’t until this year that I really started journaling with a purpose. Instead of just sitting down to write whatever came to mind, I worked through a series of prompts that helped me think about what I could get excited about for the day, who I wanted to be, who was counting on me, how to stay the course when things go wrong, & what would make me feel a sense of accomplishment at the end of the day. And it only took 5 minutes. It was amazing to me how much that changed my perspective on things that usually overwhelmed me & how much grace I gave myself when i set down the to do list. I highly recommend the Growth Day app, that gave me these journal prompts & is like having easy personal development in your back pocket.

  5. Reading/watching/listening to stories of normal people who made unconventional choices & still had success in their area & impacted others while staying true to themselves

This started out as something accidental. I was watching Frozen 2 (ahem - the only movie that I will make me ugly cry 100% of the time) & I was listening to the words in “Into the Unknown” & “Show Yourself” & felt a sense of feeling seen. Yes, Elsa is a cartoon character but her struggles & thoughts were so similar to mine - a desire to follow the unconventional, stay true to who I am, & fight the belief that there’s only one way to success. That prompted me to start being curious about others’ stories. Once I started looking, I found so many. John Williams, Ina Garten, Elphaba, Matthew McConaughey, Ted Lasso… Just by hearing that other people had the same struggles & same dreams & still found success gave me confidence to keep following my own path. All of these stories I find, have been compiled in my ever growing resource called The Dreamer’s Anthology, which is included in the members of The Unconventional Woman’s Club.

Remember, the year is not a race to accomplish as much as you can - it’s a space of time to design a life that feels like you. You have the power to shift your current circumstances. It’s not in the grand gestures but in the small intentions.

Take in all that 2024 has given you & bring only the things that bring you life into 2025.

Cheers,

Lauren
